Halal Certification

30.11.2011 - Sustainability

Diversity opens new markets

Mayr-Melnhof Karton opens new markets: On request, MM Karton qualities can from now on be ordered with a halal certificate. It confirms that during production neither raw materials were used nor came in contact with substances which are defined as “haram” (forbidden) according to Muslim faith.

Worldwide, approximately 1.3 billion people are Muslims – about 52 million in Europe. The European halal food product market alone exceeds an estimate of 51 billion euros and offers great potential with a forecasted growth rate of 20-25 percent in the next decade. This means for industries and their suppliers not only a necessity, but also a business opportunity to produce goods that correspond to the religious-ethical needs for qualitative product safety.

Requirements for cartonboard
Food manufacturers guarantee their customers with the halal certificate, that their products are produced in conformity with Islamic-religious food regulations. Thereby halal products require a holistic view, including certified packaging according to the standard ONR 142000. The packaging materials used must therefore be “halal” as well. This is defined in the additional requirements of the respective standard for packaging in contact with food.

To meet international customers‘ needs according to their requirements is top priority for MM Karton. The halal certification for MMK products by the Islamic Information and Documentation Centre Austria is recognized throughout Europe as well as globally.

What does "halal" mean?
The food sector for Muslims is subject to certain regulations. “Halal” refers to all objects and actions, which are in accordance with the Islamic regulations from the Koran and Sunna. The word derives from the Arabic language and means “permitted” or “pure”. The opposite – objects, which do not correspond with Islamic law – are “haram” (forbidden). Basically, all foodstuffs are allowed provided that they are not explicitly forbidden.
