Alpengummi goes natural with Excellent Top™ Kraft for chewing gum packaging
Virgin Fibre Cartonboard, Sustainability, Customer Stories
The Austrian startup Alpengummi is reviving the old craft of resin tapping and offering an alternative to conventional chewing gum. The package made of Excellent Top™ Kraft perfectly reflects the brand’s natural image.
100 % natural, renewable and healthy raw materials
Alpengummi makes chewing a natural experience. While the raw materials for conventional chewing gum are often fossil polymers that are hardly biodegradable, the chewing mass of Alpengummi is made of local pine resin and beeswax. Tree resins have been chewed around the world in many cultures for thousands of years because of their antibacterial properties, but early in the 20th century they were quickly replaced by cheaper synthetic masses. The pine resin for Alpengummi comes from the Austrian black pine, which has been tapped in Lower Austria for centuries because it produces exceptional quantities of resin. Resin tapping was once one of the key industries in that state. Countless products were made of resin, but nearly all were replaced by cheaper synthetic products. In 2011, resin tapping in Lower Austria was declared intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
With Alpengummi, which is currently available with mint and strawberry flavour, the traditional Austrian craft is once again “on everyone’s lips”.
100 % naturally packaged
Alpengummi chewing gum is nothing but nature, and so is the natural cartonboard package made of Excellent Top™ Kraft – both product and packaging are completely biodegradable.
The natural brown Kraft reverse side of Excellent Top™ Kraft is printed inside-out at the Austrian converter Gradwohl. This perfectly reflects the idea of naturalness of the product and the brand Alpengummi. The clever combination of natural product and recyclable packaging conveys sustainability in its purest form.
“After we found out that the chewing mass of regular chewing gum is largely made of petroleum products and hardly biodegradable, we had to do something! We found the answer in a natural chewing gum whose chewing mass is made of tree resin and beeswax. Alpengummi stands for traditional crafts as well as sustainable and local production. Our chewing gum is nothing but nature. That’s why it was very important to us that the packaging for our product would be just as natural.” – Sandra Falkner and Claudia Bergero of Alpengummi.
