Sustainability
MM focuses on economic success in harmony with society and nature. Along the strategic areas "Planet", "People", and "Prosperity" we have developed a sustainability programme taking into account the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and defined specific targets for MM.
Under Planet, we consider all aspects of ecological sustainability and thus contribute to the preservation of the natural habitat for our as well as future generations. In the context of People, we as MM fulfil our social responsibility towards all people in the context of our business activities, but especially towards our employees. With Prosperity, we pursue economic, technical progress and the promotion of the circular economy through sustainable innovations for systemic change in cooperation with the entire value chain.
Detailed information on sustainability management and the objectives of the MM Group can also be found in our Sustainability Report.
UNITED NATIONS’ SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Based on the results of MM's materiality analysis, a comprehensive sustainability strategy for the entire Group with the following SDGs was defined:

PLANET AT
MM BOARD & PAPER
- FSC® & PEFC certification of all mills
- Part of the platform "Business Ambition for 1.5°C"
- Responsible water management based on "Alliance for Water Stewardship" & "Water Mandate"
PLANET
With regard to ecological sustainability, we at MM focus on climate protection initiatives, the use of renewable raw materials, and the responsible use of water as a resource.
DECARBONIZATION
The framework for our energy management and decarbonization efforts includes the "European Green Deal" with the goal of climate neutrality for the EU by 2050. Based on science-based targets, endorsed by the Science Based Targets initiative, we at MM contribute to mitigating climate change. Furthermore, we are part of the global platform Business Ambition for 1.5°C. We hold certifications in the areas of energy and environmental management according to ISO 50001, EMAS and ISO 14001.
RAW MATERIALS
For our products, we use the renewable raw material wood from sustainably managed forests. From as early as 2009, all mills of MM Board & Paper have been certified according to FSC® and PEFC. This creates maximum transparency of our fibre use. Cartonboard can be recycled and enables a closed product cycle. A cartonboard fibre can be recycled almost indefinitely. Annually, we use around 2.8 million tons of fibre raw materials for cartonboard production. Of this, about 40 % is recycled paper and 60 % is virgin fibre from controlled forests.
WATER
Water is treated several times in an internal cycle by using the extracted groundwater first as cooling water and then in several stages as process water. Circulation and efficiency improvements are continuously reducing overall water consumption. To implement responsible water management even more comprehensively in the future, we at MM have initiated a strategy process that is based on the standard of the "Alliance for Water Stewardship" as well as the "Water Mandate" of the UN Global Compact.

Our safety and health management focuses on preventive measures at the workplace and in the working environment. We offer ongoing company medical care and preventive medical check-ups as well as a wide range of training courses on health and occupational safety.

- Long-term corporate strategy
- Stable ownership
- Solid financial situation
PROSPERITY
We consider adherence to laws and compliance to be our duty, just like the promotion of the circular economy through innovation and the integration of the entire value chain for sustainable development.
RESPONSIBLE MANAGEMENT
MM's objective is to sustainably increase the value of the company through responsible business activities in compliance with all legal regulations, industry standards and the universal principles of the UN Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and anti-corruption. This also includes measures to avoid corruption, to ensure compliance with antitrust law and to protect data in the sense of corporate data responsibility.
INNOVATION AND QUALITY
A newly created and continuously developed innovation process at MM ensures that innovations are accompanied in a targeted manner by the necessary resources and the right experts from idea generation to implementation. The innovative product solutions must meet the requirements of state-of-the-art technological functionality, quality, safety, and sustainability. To ensure quality and safety, we rely on external certifications such as ISO 9001, HACCP and Halal.
VALUE CHAIN
Together with our customers and partners, we pursue the goal of making our products even more sustainable along the entire value chain. In doing so, MM is part of a bigger picture. Since 2019, we have therefore been part of the 4evergreen Alliance, an initiative of the European Confederation of Paper Industries (CEPI), among others. In 4evergreen, companies from the entire value chain work together to advance the recycling of fibre-based packaging as well as cooperation in the development of recyclable materials.
