Packaging made of Cartonboard – The Natural Choice

25.03.2018 - Sustainability, Company / Mills

MM Karton supports "Day of Packaging 2018"

Packaging made of cartonboard is characterised by particularly high resource efficiency. MM Karton offers the most sustainable packaging solutions, both in a technical product sense and in an economic and ecological sense. For the fourth time, the "Day of Packaging" takes place around 7 June 2018 with the aim of anchoring the topic of packaging more firmly in the public eye and to raise awareness of the services provided by the packaging industry. The Mayr-Melnhof Group supports this initiative of the Deutsches Verpackungsinstitut (dvi) (German packaging institution) since the beginning.

Cartonboard – packaging material of the future The current social debate proves that cartonboard is the packaging material of the future: Consumers place social and ecological effects increasingly at the heart of their purchasing decision. The political sphere responds: With the "Plastics Strategy", the EU Commission issued clear guidelines for reducing plastic waste and increasing the percentage of recycled material at the beginning of this year. The ecological advantages of cartonboard are obvious. Cartonboard is a natural, fiber-based material made from the renewable raw material wood, which exemplifies the principles of a functioning circular economy:

  • Renewable due to the use of the organic, renewable resource wood from sustainable forestry: Certifications for fibrous materials from responsibly managed forests are standard in the cartonboard industry.
  • Climate-friendly, as forests represent a significant carbon sink and carbon remains bound in the cartonboard. Cartonboard production consumes less energy than many other packaging materials. Packaging made of cartonboard therefore has absolutely low CO2 values within the supply chain.
  • Recyclable, as cartonboard can be recycled several times. Cartonboard is born again and again. Cartonboard has the highest recycling rate of all packaging materials and forms the basis for the production of the most environmentally friendly packaging material – recycled cartonboard. Each cellulose fiber can be recycled almost unlimited.
  • Compostable/biodegradable, since cartonboard degrades without harming the environment.

Improved product perception at the point of sale
Packaging plays a key role in the customer's shopping experience: 70 % of all purchasing decisions are made directly at the point of sale. According to a study by the business consultancy PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), almost every third consumer would refrain from buying a product because it is not sustainably packed or over-packed. The trend points clearly towards cartonboard: While plastics are used especially in low-price segments, cartonboard is increasingly being used in high-end segments. Cartonboard packaging is perceived as high quality, individual brand and product messages can be ideally communicated by excellent printing.

Conclusion: Packaging solutions made of cartonboard are positive for the environment, increase the sustainable image of a product and can ultimately contribute to the company's success. It is important to package intelligently and use materials that are sustainable whenever possible. Cartonboard is the natural choice!
